PSHE INTENT~

At Saughall All Saints it is our intention to provide high quality experiences throughout the school using the PSHE, Citizenship guidelines and the SEAL project (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning). Each unit is based on clearly-defined learning goals or standards which lay out the subject, personal and social knowledge, as well as the skills and understandings children need at different stages of their life within school and beyond.  We aim to prepare children with the necessary attributes, behaviour and mind-set required in order to keep themselves healthy and safe, thus prepared for life and work in their future years. Well-developed PSHE programmes impact both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged and are essential in safeguarding and promoting well-being.

As a school, we deliver this learning within the familiar, happy and caring atmosphere of the classroom, where all children reflect on their own lives, asking and answering their own questions or queries, thus striving for ways to continuously improve. We promote ways to show understanding and respect for diversity and differences, both locally and around the world. We believe it is fundamental that all adopt ways of making an impact now, wherever they can, and for the future. We endeavour to encourage healthy lifestyles so that all can go on to form effective, fulfilling friendships and relationships of their own, in addition to preparing every individual for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences necessary for growing up.

The teaching of PSHE units can take the form of whole class lessons by class teachers weekly, involving group, paired and individual work. The organisation of the classroom will depend on the needs and abilities of the children and also on the aims of the lesson. A reflective and ‘open discussion’ approach is required for most aspects of PSHE lessons, with some lessons taking the form of promoting thoughts through role play and Circle time activities. Each unit is structured to make sure that children’s learning experiences are as stimulating as possible, with the provision of interactive activities and stories too. SMSC is included in our coverage as well as other initiatives and our school’s learning powers to promote, support and enhance our children’s development.

Through our teaching of PSHE we hope that children will increase their knowledge and understanding of the changing world and will want to look after themselves and others they meet from day to day. We hope that they will begin to develop respect, interest and concern for people in the community in which they live and throughout the world, regardless of culture, race, gender and religion.

The teaching and learning of PSHE and Relationship Education supports and upholds this vision.
