Geography Curriculum
Geography
Our Geography intent:
‘From the moment we are born, it is our instinct to begin to explore our world around us with all our senses’
At Saughall All Saints Primary School we want to encourage and develop our children’s natural inquisitiveness.
We want our children to….
- Learn about their British culture and be able to compare it to that of other countries.
- Understand and contribute towards protecting the world in which we live.
- Take part in local studies to learn more about where they come from and how people affect the world around them.
Geography study should be undertaken through topic work that includes practical activities and fieldwork wherever possible.
In Key Stage one the children will undertake 3 geographical studies over a 2 year period and wherever possible any geographical links to the history topics in the other 3 terms will be explored alongside the main historical topic
In Key Stage two the children will cover 6 geography topics and again explore any geographical links to the history topics too.
In cycle B the whole school will focus on local studies spending a week off timetable immersed in the humanities.
There is a progression of skills from Reception to Year 6 and the children are given many opportunities to practise and develop those skills with a teacher, in groups and independently. They are encouraged to persevere when a task is tricky and be resilient in how they tackle any problems they may have.
Emphasis is placed on introduction of key vocabulary for each topic and allowing the children time to discuss and use this vocabulary in order to develop their oracy skills.
Where possible Literacy texts will be used to incorporate this vocabulary and help build upon the children’s understanding of the vocabulary and topic as a whole. Fiction and non-fiction books will be made available for the children to read in order to support their geographical studies and develop their love of reading.
Before a new topic homework is set so the children can do their own research and find things that interest them linked to that topic. They present this in a learning log and any children who have any particular specialist knowledge on any of our topics will be given the opportunity to share this with the rest of the class.
