British Science Week

British Science Week

As part of the schools continued focus on promoting science, we recently took part in British Science Week. Each year group pledged to complete an afternoon of fun, engaging science experiments that would stimulate and pique the interest of the pupils.

Year 1 & 2

The focus in KS1 was definitely on fun activities! Children made slime using corn flour and water, created rainbow patterns using milk and food colouring and then made funky coloured foam using bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and food colouring!

Year 3 & 4

The three classes in Lower Key Stage 2 each chose a different activity. Mr Fuller’s class looked at properties of materials and investigated how to transport water from one table to another using containers made from paper and card. Mr Amesbury’s class made different soapy mixtures and tried to create the biggest bubble they could and Mrs Hooper’s class looked at magnetism and how it could be used to move metallic objects easily.

Year 5 & 6

In Upper Key Stage 2 we looked at chemical reactions and linked it too recent lessons on reversible and irreversible changes. We created tiny gas explosions using Alka-Seltzer and water, created slime that reacted to physical contact and dropped Mentos into Coke to cause a sticky mess!

We were supported in our endeavours by Mrs French, our Chair of Governors, who came in to work alongside the pupils and find out more about how science was being promoted.

A special thank you to all members of staff for creating such a fun and engaging week, and to the pupils for making the most of it, behaving brilliantly and showing a willingness to learn!
