Y5/6: Mrs Mitchell's & Mrs Hooper's Class 2019 - 2020

Mrs Mitchell

Spring Term

What’s happening this term

During this Spring Term,  we will be looking at our new topic, "Do we see our drinking water again?" - Rivers. In this new topic we will study the water cycle, describe key features of a river, find out about the journey of water, discover how water is treated to be made safe and find out why people choose to settle close to water.

Science will be a study of Living Things - in this unit we will look at animals and plants from a broad range of habitats, describing differences in their life cycles. The children will also describe the  life processe of reproduction in some plants and animals.

Spellings will be made up of words which focus on specific spelling patterns and words from the Year 5/6 spelling list These will be given out to learn each week for a test each Friday. Children can use their individual Spelling Shed login to practise their spellings using the games to reinforce their learning.

Class Rules

- Pay attention when someone is speaking

- Treat others how you would like to be treated

- Look after resources and keep the classroom tidy

- Always try your best with a smile on your face

- Work together as a team to support each other and create a positive, calm working environment

Homework

Homework will be given out every Wednesday for Literacy for all groups (focusing on WOW words) but will be group specific for Numeracy (see your child's planner for details).

We will be having a particular focus on Timestables each week, using Timestable Rockstars to make this a fun and engaging activity. This can be done at home any time and support in encouraging your child would be appreciated.

Homework needs to be handed in on a Monday morning so that it can be marked and feedback given to the children. Sometimes we will go through homework together as a class and so it is important that it is handed in on time.

Reading

Every pupil has been given a Reading Record that is to be used in school and taken home with their chosen reading book. The expectation is that they will read at least three times to themselves out of school and record this in the book. Ideally, at least one of these sessions will be to an adult at home. This encourages your child to read and also gives you chance to see what progress they are making.

Reading Records will be collected in every Friday to be checked. Children completing this successfully will be rewarded with Table Points.

PE

Year 5  will go swimming on a Tuesday afternoon  whilst Year 6 will have gymnastics.

Both year groups will have indoor athletics/circuits with Tom on a Wednesday afternoon.

Children not in the correct PE kit will not be allowed to take part in the lesson.
