Y5/6: Mrs Mitchell's & Mrs Hooper's Class 2019 - 2020

Mrs Mitchell

Autumn Term

What’s happening this term

During this Autumn Term,  we will be looking at our new topic, "The Titanic" - in this new and exciting topic, we will be looking at Edwardian life in Britain and how this fascinating society was reflected in life on board the infamous Titanic!

Science will be a study of Electricity - in this unit we will study how electricity is conducted, how a circuit is made and what effects different things have on this such as voltage. Children will have the opportunity to create their own working circuits in class.

Spellings will be made up of words which focus on specific spelling patterns,  words from the Year 3/4 spelling list and will also contain a few WOW words which the children will be encouraged to use in their writing. These will be given out to learn each week for a test each Friday. Children can use their individual Spelling Shed login to practise their spellings using the games to reinforce their learning.

Class Rules

- Pay attention when someone is speaking

- Treat others how you would like to be treated

- Look after resources and keep the classroom tidy

- Always try your best with a smile on your face

- Work together as a team to support each other and create a positive, calm working environment

Homework will be given out every Wednesday for Literacy for all groups (focusing on spellings) but will be group specific for Numeracy (see your child's planner for details).

We will be having a particular focus on Timestables each week, using Timestable Rockstars to make this a fun and engaging activity. This can be done at home any time and support in encouraging your child would be appreciated.

Homework needs to be handed in on a Monday morning so that it can be marked and feedback given to the children. Sometimes we will go through homework together as a class and so it is important that it is handed in on time.

Every pupil has been given a Reading Record that is to be used in school and taken home with their chosen reading book. The expectation is that they will read at least three times to themselves out of school and record this in the book. Ideally, at least one of these sessions will be to an adult at home. This encourages your child to read and also gives you chance to see what progress they are making.

Reading Records will be collected in every Friday to be checked. Children completing this successfully will be rewarded with Table Points.

Year 6  will go swimming on a Tuesday afternoon up until Christmas whilst Year 5 will have continue with gymnastics.

Both year groups will have Dance on a Thursday afternoon.

Children not in the correct PE kit will not be allowed to take part in the lesson.
