Y5/6: Mr Preston's Class 2020 - 2021
Welcome to the Summer Term
Welcome back to school for the Summer Term. We are beginning our new topics and have lots of fun and exciting things to learn!
What’s happening this term...
During this Spring Term, we will be looking at our new topic: 'Aboriginal Australia'. During this topic we will be looking at Aboriginal Culture, their journey to Australia and the affect that Colonial Britain had on the development of the country as a whole.
Science lessons will be looking at Light - where does light come from, how do we see things around us and how does light behave in different mediums?
Spellings will be focusing on specific patterns, words from the statutory spelling lists and also some WOW words to expand vocabulary. These will be introduced each week on a Monday and the children will be tested on a Friday. A letter containing the spellings for the half term will be sent home and a copy has also been added to this page.
Treat each other with respect
Dont give up when its hard!
Everyone is responsible for tidying
Help each other where possible
Homework will be sent home now as normal - children will receive maths homework on a weekly basis, timestable challenges and weekly spellings.
At this time, every Friday all Year 5&6 pupils have the opportunity to change their book for home using our main library. Pupils will be able to access our class libraries during the week for independent reading as well as accessing lots of texts through lessons.
After studying Rooftoppers for our Guided Reading sessions last term, we will now continue to read it as our class book.
All children, no matter their age, benefit greatly from sharing a book with an adult (both academically and emotionally) and we are keen to encourage this outside of school as much as possible.
For more book ideas for a range of ages / genres please take a look at https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/ where you can sample sizeable extracts.
PE will continue as normal, twice a week on a Monday and Thursday. Monday is rounders and Thursday is House of Dance. Children will need to bring in PE on a Monday and then taken home on a Friday.
As always, children not in the correct PE kit will not be allowed to take part in the lesson. Any children not taking part in PE for other reasons will need to bring a letter in from home - we cannot accept a verbal explanation from the children.
We are focusing on Times Tables and keeping fit outside with our weekly running challenge!!
