What’s happening this term

SUMMER TERM

Our Topic this term is a Geography based topic where we will be looking at the rainforests around the world focusing on South American rainforests.

As young geographers the children will be:

  • Learning how longitude and latitude are used to locate places in the world.
  • Use atlases to locate the world’s rainforest, particularly those in South America.
  • Explore the climatic conditions that support rainforests and the impact rainforests have on global weather.
  • Understand the impact of human activities on the natural rainforest habitats and steps taken to protect them

ENGLISH

We begin with a story that links to our rainforest topic, which is called ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. This tackles the issue of habitat loss in the rainforests and the impact this has on wildlife in a clever and imaginative wayImage result for great kapok tree

Within this unit, the children will have opportunities to explore how direct speech can be used appropriately and how it needs to be punctuated, they will infer and empathise with characters’ feelings, the children will use careful word choices (including figurative language) to create rich descriptions for both the setting and the characters before writing and editing their own version of the story.

SCIENCE

Animals and Humans is our Science unit where as young scientists the children will be investigating:

  • The names and locations of the main bones in the body.
  • How diet and exercise are important to humans.
  • Explaining how muscles enable the skeleton to move.

Homework

English and Maths homework is given out every Thursday and needs to be completed and handed in on the following Monday.

A list of spellings are sent home at the start of each half-term and the children have a spelling test each Monday on the selected words for that week.

You can find the link to the lists at the bottom of this page.

Reading

With reading being such an important part of every child's learning, we are really encouraging all pupils to read as much as possible out of school as well as during the school day.

All children have reading books and new reading record books to show when they are reading - which is ideally every day!

To motivate all readers, the reading records are checked on a FRIDAY and children receive a raffle ticket for every 3 separate reading sessions at home.  Children are able to change their reading books at different times of the day but have to take responsibility to change their books when they know they need to. In the juniors the children read as part of a group once a week with their teacher as part of guided reading session as well as have independent reading time.

PE

We have 2 outdoor PE sessions this term. On Wednesday afternoons we’ll be doing athletics. Then on Friday afternoons we are lucky to have a sports coach in school this half term who will be teaching cricket and tennis skills.

Full PE kit should always be in school during the week; (white shorts, navy t-shirt, trainers, socks, a hair bobble for girls). PLUS please ensure all kit is clearly labelled.

Also as part of our Physical Education programme, Year 3/4 children will be taking part in Cross country athletics every week (weather permitting).
