Welcome back to a new school year. I hope you all had a super summer break and everyone is ready for a fresh start to a new term. Mr Graham :)

This Term's Topic

Our topic this Autumn term follows a geography theme and is a UK regional study of Snowdonia where we will learn about this fabulous National Park. During this unit, we will develop or map skills by:

  • Using atlases and maps to locate countries and regions.
  • Use compass points and 4 or 6 figure grid references to locate features on a map.
  • Know why a key is needed on a map and recognise symbols on an Ordnance Survey (OS) map.
  • Identify the key physical and human features for a geographical location.

In Literacy, we will begin the new year by recapping some basic literacy skills before moving on to look at a wonderful book called ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne. The children explore the world of Hannah, a gorilla obsessed girl, who dreams of meeting a real gorilla before writing their own version of the story.

In Reading, we will look at

Our science topic will be States of Matter where we will investigate:

  • The 3 different states of matter: solid, liquid and gas
  • How materials change state at different temperatures
  • The processes of evaporation and condensation

We will be reviewing our class rules to ensure we have a happy and safe class this year and will share them here soon.

We will be returning to setting reguar weekly homework tasks. These will be set on a Thursday and will be due in on a Monday. In addition, a half term's spelling list will be set home at the start of the half term.

With reading being such an important part of every child's learning, we are really encouraging all pupils to read as much as possible out of school as well as during the school day.

All children will be able to choose a book from our class library to be kept in school so they can read at opportunities during the day-which will ideally be every day!

In the juniors, we will introduce a class book as part of guided reading sessions where the children will have the opportunity to widen their vocabulary and deepen their understanding, as well as having independent reading time.

Children will need to have their PE kits in school and this will need to come in on a Monday and can go home on a Friday if necessary. Also it is essential that long hair is tied back and earrings needed to be covered for safety.

This half term we an outdoor PE session on Tuesday afternoon where we will be looking at Tag Rugby skills and on a Thursday afternoon we will have an indoor PE session where the class will be honing their dance skills with a professional dance tutor for House of Dance.
