Y1/2: Mrs Hooper & Mrs Hughes 2021 - 2022

Mrs Calvert

Mrs Hughes

Mrs Hooper

Welcome to the first Summer term! We are looking forward to a half term full of wonderful learning and lots of fun! (Hopefully with some sunshine too!)

Our topic this half term is

'Ride the Dragon Machine!'

Literacy and Maths

In Literacy, we are reading a book called The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward.  We are reading a little bit of it each day and are basing our Literacy work around the events in the story.

In Maths, Year 1 and Year 2 will be covering different topics, which include Place Value and multiplication for Year 1 and Multiplication and Division for Year 2, alongside further practice of the things we've learnt previously.

Foundation Topics

In Science, we will be investigating different questions such as 'Can you jump further if you are taller?'

In ICT, we will be learning how to make a stop motion animation.

In Art, we will be working printing and making some dragon scale prints.

In RE, we will be looking at what Christians believe about God through different stories in the Bible.

In Music, we will be working on counting the beats in music.

Each child will take home one reading book at a time, along with a reading record and a bookmark, which features lots of advice and ideas for how to engage with your child as they read the story.  The reading books can be changed as and when the children need to change them but please note that, in order to promote independence, the children are responsible for changing their book when they need to.  The teacher will tell all of the children to go and change their books if they need to and so it is important that each child takes the responsibility to respond and go to change their book at that time.

As a general guide, it is expected that the children will read a book or two per week.  This will include re-reading the story - an important part of learning to read and building fluency - and will, of course, vary as the children take home books of differing lengths.

You can still use Oxford Owl at https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/ online for additional books. Here you will find books grouped by the different colours according to your child's reading level.

Please write in your child’s reading record each time you hear them read, this can include both school books and any other substantial reading that your child does while they’re out of school.  We reward children with certificates, based on how many entries they have in their reading records so it is important that all reading is recorded in order for us to celebrate their efforts with them.

In PE this term, we will be playing small-sided ball games on Wednesdays and, on Fridays, we will be doing rounders and athletics, developing a wide range of skills, such as coordination, throwing, catching, jumping, balance and more.

The children should come to school on Monday with their PE kit in a small bag, which is to be kept in school for the week and then sent home to be washed on a Friday. We would also appreciate your help in allowing the children to independently dress and undress themselves at home.  In Key Stage 1, it is an expectation that the children get themselves ready for PE.

Children will usually wear their white shorts and navy PE t-shirt for PE but, while the cooler weather is lingering, they can instead wear tracksuit bottoms or leggings with their PE t-shirt and school sweatshirt or cardigan if they wish to.  It is a good idea to have both options in the PE bag - please make sure that you show your children the different items that are in there or even get them to pack it with you!

We will continue sending home maths homework and spellings on a Tuesday.  The maths homework is to be returned by Monday the following week. Spelling sheets, however, should be kept at home so that they can be revised up until the spelling tests, which take place on a Monday morning.

Spelling tests take place on a Monday in the children's phonics group.  They will be tested on the words that they took home on the previous Tuesday - these words are tailored to what they are learning in phonics at the time.  Children will be sent home that day with a Spelling Score Slip that will state their score and note the words that the children misspelt.

Your child will need a coat in school at all times as we will be doing as much as we can outside.

No bags, apart from lunch bags, book bags and PE bags, are needed in school.

Please make sure that all items of clothing, including PE kits, shoes, and coats, have the children's names on the labels.  The children may be able to identify their belongings at home, but it is surprising how difficult they find it when they haven't worn something for a while and it looks so similar to everyone else’s!

Water Bottles

Please remember that children need a full water bottle every day and we will send them home every night for a wash and refill.
