Welcome to the Spring Term

Welcome back! We hope you have had a great Christmas and would like to wish each and everyone of you a very happy new year.

Mrs Ramsden will be teaching you Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning and Mrs Calvert will be teaching you on Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday.

What’s happening this term

Our topic this spring is Healthy Me. The children will get the chance to investigate what keeps us healthy in 4 different ways:

  • What can I do to be safe and happy?
  • Why is exercise good for me?
  • What kind of foods help me to stay healthy?
  • Why is personal hygiene important to keep me healthy?

The children will follow these questions throughout their Science work and also create an information booklet in their Literacy work. They will also get the opportuntiy to look at what makes a healthy pizza? They will design and make this too! Whilst making their pizzas, the children will also experince being a TV chef. They will get the chance to write a script and film each other, making their own TV chef programme!

Homework

The children will have time to settle in to KS1 before we start sending homework home as detailed below.

The children will have spellings come home every week on a Monday and will then have them checked in school on the following Monday morning.

Maths homework will also been sent out by your child’s maths teacher (which may be different to their class teacher.) This too will come out on Monday and is expected back in on the following Monday. Please make every effort to ensure your child completes their homework as it helps to support what they have been learning in class and builds up good attitudes to work and learning.

 

Reading

Reading is essential to your child being able to access the curriculum and the best thing you can do to support them is to read as often as possible with them. This could be anything from 5-10 minutes or as long as your child is engaged and wants to read. Find a quiet time when possible and make it a special time where they have your full attention. We understand that with out of school activities it is not always possible to read every night but we would encourage you to do it as often as possible as this is what will help your child to progress quicker. Please sign your child’s diary every time they read at home and feel free to write any notes or use the diary to ask us anything about their reading. The children will earn certificates for the number of times they read at home starting with white award for 15 times and going up to Diamond for 150 times.

Reading books can be changed by your child every day. This is done after register in the afternoon. We will ask the children who need to do a book change and the onus is on them to then go and change their book in order to build up their independence. I if your child forgets to do this, come with them to let us know at the end of the day and we can remind them of the correct time to swap books and also let them go and choose a new one,

The expectation when it is your child’s day to read is that they bring us their reading record to be signed as their group is called to read.

PE

We will be doing Multi-skills on a Monday afternoon with a sports coach and football skills with Mrs Calvert on a Thursday afternoon.

Children must have PE kits in school in order to fully take part in these activities. Please ensure long hair is tied back and no earrings are worn wherever possible on these days.

As the weather goes colder your child will need long pants (joggers or leggings etc) and they may wear their school sweatshirt or one you send in with their PE kit as 1 session of PE will be outdoors.
